Action Against Hunger Mission (ACF)
Action Against Hunger in partnership with with ACF delivers clean water to thousands of survivors in Port-au-Prince by setting up more than 40 distribution points and repairing damged systems. Action Against Hunger received a $100, 000 grant from Tyco
International to deploy four large water bladders, each with a capacity of 10,000 liters for meeting the needs of roughly 1,500 people per day. Prior to the disaster, Action Against Hunger's team in Haiti consisted of more than100 public health professionals focused on areas where as much as %70 of the population lacked access to adequate sanitation. ACF installed 41 resevoirs serving nearly 70, 000 people across Port-au-Prince alone. In nearby Leogane, ACF restored a water treatment facility serving a population of 125,000, and its teams have worked to outift hospitals and medical facilities in Gonaives with emergency access to clean water. ACF has been in Haiti since 1985 and has focused primarily on food security, water, and sanitation in Port-de-Paix, Gonaives, Amse Rouge, and Jeremiah.

El Porvenir
El Porvenir's water projets include hand-dug wells, gravity low systems, and water quality testing. Hand-dug wells: With the help of El Porvenir, a community can build a hand-dug covered, sanitary well that will dramatically improve the life and health of the entire village. The community provides the labor to build the well. Many community members participate in the installation of the rope pump, the Nicaraguan Ministry of Water's standard for rural wells. El Porvenir health educators engage in a program of testing the water for bacteria and assist the community in taking remedial measures if needed.
Spring Capture Systems: El Porvenir provides the materials so that the community can build a concrete box around a natural spring to protect the water from dirt, debris, animals, and other contaminants. The box can be fitted with a rope pump, or if the spring is located above the community and is distant, the water can flow by gravity through PVC piping to the community.

FilterPure Filters
Filter Pure’s is a non-profit that manufactures and distributes an improved, inexpensive ceramic water filtration containers, made in the Tanzania, Dominican Republic and Haiti. The technology of the water filter is simple, effective, and, sustainable. A round-bottom ceramic pot is made from a mixture of clay, a combustible material (sawdust or rice husks), and colloidal silver. The colloidal silver is a naturally occurring anti-bacterial which improves the bacteria removal rate for the filter. First, the clay and combustible are mixed with a measured amount of silver and water until a homogeneous mixture is formed.. The mixture is made into a filter and kiln fired, burning out the combustible material and leaving micro pores coated with the silver to clean the water. The FilterPure filter was designed to be produced and maintained in a third world environment. Both the production process and ongoing maintenance procedures are designed to be “fool-proof”. Simplicity in design and maintenance, as well as providing a long useful life, were primary goals.
PLEASE NOTE: Our filters are NOT FOR SALE in the United States.
They are locally produced by potters in the Dominican Republic and Tanzania for use in those countries.
Thank you for your continued interest in Filter Pure.

Ghana West Africa Missions
While Ghana West Africa Missions is using large air rotary drilling rigs, and highly skilled operators - there is technology available that would allow a community to drill a water well using simple equipment, and communal labor. It is a technology that is appropriate for communities that are economically underprivileged, and technologically behind most first and second world communities. Generally, after a bit of training, the villagers will be able to drill a water well for themselves using the simple technology we provide them with. (PDF Hand Drilling Manual provided on website)

UNICEF - Water Sanitation & Hygiene 6 Month Report
When water is scarce and sanitation is disrupted, lacking or non-existent, children are at tremendous risk of lifethreatening diseases, including diarrhoea, cholera, and respiratory infections. Sadly these risks were a day-to-day reality for 40 per cent of children in Haiti even before the quake. While no surge in disease has been reported so far, the threat remains acute due to overcrowded living conditions and hazards of the rainy season. Expanding access to safe water and sanitation is a matter of urgency for child survival and preservation of public health.

Test Kits
It is important to know what contaminants are in the water to match the filter to the problem. Claims about contaminant removal vary from product to product, so read the fine print. Consider how much water you consume and how much effort and disruption to the daily routine can people tolerate. The more contaminants you need to remove, the more complicated the filter, though there are trade-offs.
